Abstract
This study investigated the profitability of poultry egg production in selected districts of the Northern Region. Primary data was collected from 125 poultry farms across three purposively selected Districts in the Region. Structured questionnaire was used to solicit data for the study. With the aid of descriptive statistics, farm level data were analysed. Per the profit measures, the study revealed that poultry egg production in the study area was profitable as indicated by the average gross margin and the average net farm income. The challenges of business operations of poultry egg farmers were also examined. As underscored by the descriptive statistics, the serious constraints confronting the poultry egg farmers in the area in order of severity are; high cost of feeds, harsh weather conditions, high mortality rate, high cost of credit, cheap imported substitutes, poor market, poor extension and rising cost of day-old chicks. It is recommended that the government’s agricultural policy of ‘planting for food and jobs’ be extended to poultry egg production to create sustainable jobs for the youth in the region towards poverty reduction and wealth creation
