Abstract

The primary causes of the low linseed seed yields in Ethiopia are poor soil fertility and a lack of better seeds. A field experiment was carried out at the Harato and Gitilo locations over the main cropping seasons of 2019 and 2020 to evaluate the effect of linseed types and NPS rates on fatty acid profiles. There were sixteen treatment combinations in the experiment: four NPS rates (0, 50, 100, and 150 kg ha-1) and four linseed varieties (Belay-96, Berene, Kuma, and local check) were set up in a randomized complete block design. Saturated and unsaturated fatty acids were shown to significantly (p<0.05) impacted by the interaction between NPS rates and linseed varieties. Improved seed had the highest palmitic acid (5.75% and 5.66%) whereas the local cultivar with zero fertilizer had the lowest palmitic acid (4.83%). In similar manner, improved varieties showed the highest levels of linoleic fatty acid (14.34% and 14.26%) at zero NPS rates. Similarly, maximum linoleic fatty acid (14.34% and 14.26%) was recorded at 100 kg NPS ha-1 on improved varieties and a low linoleic acid (11.98%) was recorded on the local cultivar at zero NPS rates. In general, increasing the NPS rates had increased the palmitic and linoleic fatty acids of linseed varieties. Therefore, cultivating the Kuma variety with 100 kg NPS ha-1 is recommended for the study sites and similar agro-ecologies
